During the uterine artery embolization procedure, a thin catheter is inserted through a small incision in the groin or wrist and guided to the arteries that supply blood to the fibroids. Tiny embolic particles are then released to block these arteries, cutting off the blood flow that allows fibroids to grow. As a result, the fibroids gradually shrink and symptoms improve over time.

A follow-up ultrasound is scheduled after a few days or weeks to confirm that the vein has successfully closed and that blood flow has normalized.
