What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that commonly appear on the legs when the valves inside the veins weaken and fail to push blood efficiently back toward the heart. This causes blood to pool in the veins, leading to visible bulging, heaviness, pain, swelling, cramps, and skin changes over time. While varicose veins may begin as a mild discomfort or cosmetic concern, they can progress if left untreated, sometimes resulting in complications such as skin discoloration, eczema, or leg ulcers. Early evaluation, proper diagnosis, and timely management can help control symptoms, improve circulation, and prevent long-term problems associated with vein disease.
